Dr. James Brown is a public school administrator and Professor of Psychology and Education. He has been focused on developing programs and professional learning communities in K-12 and post-secondary education that are high-tech, high-touch, and personalized to help each individual achieve. He currently works for a public school district helping students and teachers find their own creative path to teaching and learning success. Prior to his work in education, Dr. Brown was a serial entrepreneur; managing technology initiatives for several venture firms and blue chip companies. He brought that formative experience to his new work tempered with a posture of service to the education community.

Philosophical Approach

In order to provide an empirical foundation to his work, Dr. Brown incorporates research, tools, and knowledge from three key domains:

  1. The Learning and Teaching (Pedagogy) Domain: This is a philosophy that one should pursue work that is challenging, meaningful, and from which one can perpetually learn and grow. Innovation in this area requires a person to always strive to push beyond their immediate knowledge boundaries in order to encounter and understand the unfamiliar and the novel; to look to the borders and the fringe as it were, rather than the well traveled center. Furthermore, much of this style of learning occurs informally, outside formalized forms of education where stakes are often high and failure less well tolerated.

  2. The Psychological Domain: Growth in one’s work is experienced as expanded consciousness that is primarily achieved through critical and analytical analysis, as well as reflection on learning. The main requirement for the psychological task is to always be questioning beliefs and biases in order to see the horizon of one’s particular cultural perspective and bounds of consciousness. The primary tool for psychologizing in this fashion is reflection that has capacity to transform events and knowledge into meaningful experiences.

  3. The Semiotic (Design) Domain: The work of constructing meaningful experience almost always involves constructing working models of our understanding. This is often best achieved through a process of design that uses multiple forms and semiotic systems as tools of representation to convey information and meaning. It is a process that involves divergent thinking and often leads to concepts capable of expanding current knowledge and design resources.
